Symposium brings together scientists and industry representatives
In January 2022 more than 100 participants from more than ten countries joined the 1st edition of the fully virtual one-day HVDC Cable Systems Symposium: Theory and Practice to discuss current trends and challenges in the field of HVDC cable system technology. The Symposium was organised by Yvonne Späck-Leigsnering and Herbert de Gersem from the TU Darmstadt together with Myriam Koch from the TU Munich.

Future technology: Innovation for terahertz analysis

EU Research Council funds project by etit-Professor Sascha Preu with 150,000 euros
etit- Professor Sascha Preu is awarded a “Proof of Concept” grant of 150,000 euros by the European Research Council (ERC). This will fund his “PhoSTer THz” project, which focuses on the development of systems for the spectral analysis of powerful terahertz sources. One of the important uses of the latter will be for applications in 6G mobile networks.

Computer simulation optimises electrical machines

First German-Austrian Collaborative Research Centre/Transregio approved
TU Darmstadt and TU Graz are intensifying their research into how electrical machines can be decisively improved through computer simulation. To this end, the first German-Austrian Collaborative Research Centre/Transregio (TRR) 361 has been approved. The German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Austrian Science Fund FWF are funding the TRR “Computational Electrical Machine Laboratory” with a total of over eight million euros.

Underground high-voltage direct current cable systems are an important component of the green energy transition. As part of a research cooperation in this field, etit scientist Yvonne Späck-Leigsnering was a guest at the TU Munich. The stay was supported by equal opportunities funds from the department.

Contribution to sustainable development – IEEE PES PowerTech Best Paper Award

E5 employee finishes second in the IEEE PES PowerTech Best Paper Award.
From 28 June to 2 July 2021, the IEEE PES PowerTech took place under the title „Power for sustainable development goals“. Marcel Böhringer from the department „Electrical Power Supply with Renewable Energies“ was represented in the presentation session „Storage I“ and earned second place in the Papadias Student Paper Award for his paper.

Dr. Garcia-Agundez receives Marie Curie Fellowship
A stroke can take people out of their normal lives without warning and inflict unimaginable suffering on them. Afterwards, many have to undergo therapy and learn to speak or walk again. Despite advanced medical methods, not every patient has the same therapeutic success. With the help of AI, Dr. Garcia-Agundez is trying to predict the success of therapies for patients.

Women's Assembly presents the new equality concept
On 30.4. this year's networking meeting of the department etit took place under the topic “ Studies and then? Career paths in etit”. The networking meeting was followed by the women's general assembly. There, the new Gender Equality Team etit was elected and the updated equal opportunities concept was presented.

Girls' Day also a great success digitally

Experience electrical engineering! At the first digital Girls' Day, schoolgirls gained insights into the various areas of electrical engineering. Online experiments or videos, teamwork and a quiz challenged the curiosity of the young participants. The new format was organized by the department's gender equality team.

Jutta Hanson has been appointed by the Leopoldina as a German member of the Energy Steering Panel of EASAC (European Academies Science Advisory Council). In this capacity, the expert in the field of renewable energies will advise EU decision-makers.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christoph Hoog Antink new professor for etit
Since 01.01.2021, Professor Dr.-Ing. Hoog Antink is the new professor for Medical Engineering at the Department etit. His research interests are in the field of artificial intelligence in medicine and medical signal processing. In his lectures, he plans to introduce students to the interplay between technology and medicine.

How can the cultivation of plants be optimised in the face of ever-increasing demand and limited space? Tim Hegemann explored this question in his master's thesis in the Research Group of Lighting Technology at the Department etit. His innovative research was honoured by the LiTG with its Young Talent Award.

Student Best Paper Award for Aylin Tastan and Afief D. Pamudi
Darmstadt, 30.10.2020. At the 2020 IEEE Radar Conference, Aylin Tastan and Afief D. Pambudi from the Signal Processing Group of etit both successfully participated in the 2020 IEEE Radar Conference Student Contest. Aylin Tastan’s work on robust clustering for human gait signatures was awarded the Best Student Paper Award, whereas the runner-up by Afief D. Pambudi focused on robust landmine detection. Additionally, Pamudi also won the first prize in the Three-Minute Thesis competition, held for the first at an IEEE Radar Conference

The etit graduation ceremony of the 2019/20 winter semester
The winter semester has nearly run its course. For about 100 graduates of the etit Department, this semester has been the final one in their university career to date. On 14 February 2020, they congregated for their graduation ceremony at the repurposed historic Maschinenhaus (turbine building) of TU Darmstadt, where they received their Bachelor’s and Master’s degree certificates along with words of congratulations from their professors and invited speakers.

Award for Lorenzo Bortot in the field of applied superconductivity
Lorenzo Bortot received an IEEE CSC Graduate Study Fellowship in Applied Superconductivity at this year's Magnet Technology Conference in Vancouver. He works at the Chair for Computational Electromagnetics of our department and at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.
