More skilled labour for the European microchip industry

EU funds international GreenChips-EDU project
TU Darmstadt is involved in the international research project “GreenChips-EDU” together with 14 other universities, companies and research institutions under the leadership of TU Graz. The aim is to train urgently needed specialists for the semiconductor industry. Professor Klaus Hofmann's etit department of Integrated Electronic Systems is largely responsible for designing the learning programmes. The EU is funding the project with 7.15 million euros.

A learning centre by and for students
In November 2023, the Kittler Student Centre (KSC) will celebrate its tenth anniversary. On 5 November 2013, the completely renovated learning centre of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology was officially opened in a ceremony with the then TU Chancellor Manfred Efinger and the department management.

Lasers deflected using ultrasound

Potential to revolutionise high performance optics
Using a novel method, beams of laser light can be deflected using air alone. An invisible grating made only of air is not only immune to damage from the laser light, but it also preserves the original quality of the beam, reports the interdisciplinary research team in the journal Nature Photonics.

Darmstadt lighting engineer honoured at DfwG annual conference 2023
From 4 to 6 October 2023, the annual conference of the German Colour Science Society (DfwG) took place at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research in Potsdam. Current research in various disciplines of colour science was presented in numerous expert lectures. Several young light technicians from the TU Darmstadt gave lectures.

The 15th ISAL (International Symposium for Automotive Lighting) conference was held at the Darmstadtium Congress Center in Darmstadt between September 25 and 27, 2023. The conference was first held in 1995 and is organized biennially by the Department of Adaptive Lighting Systems and Visual Processing at the TU Darmstadt.

etit presents innovations with electricity

Science Castle of the TU Darmstadt ceremonially reopened
Bright sunshine, around 10,000 guests and a rich programme: with a big celebration, the TU reopened the “Science Castle” after 15 years of renovation and gave it back to the city society. The etit department was also there.

German Research Foundation funds project for optimized color representation
The Laboratory of Adaptive Lighting System and Visual Processing, headed by Prof. Khanh, is working on a groundbreaking development in the field of future LED lighting systems. In a current research project of the German Research Foundation (DFG), an innovative colorimetry is being researched, which should enable an improved representation of colors under LED illumination.

Athene Young Investigator Alejandro Jiménez Sáez is investigating how to steer millimeter waves
Dr. Alejandro Jiménez-Sáez, a new Athene Young Investigator at TU Darmstadt, is carrying out research into how millimeter waves could be used in 5G or 6G mobile networks in future in order to improve data transfer rates, offer better protection against eavesdropping and make the networks more flexible. The 30-year old postdoc is investigating which new components will be needed for this purpose and how this technology can be realized.
