We place great emphasis on combining research, teaching and application. Our aim is to develop forward-looking and sustainable solutions for the major current and future challenges together with partners from business, politics and civil society.

Start-ups

Our department has been characterised by innovative strength since its foundation. Erasmus Kittler invented electrical engineering in Darmstadt in 1882. We have retained and continued this pioneering spirit to this day, which can be seen in the many start-ups and spin-offs created by our scientists and students.

Application-oriented research

Our premise: To develop solutions for current and future challenges. To this end, our scientists work closely with partners from industry; questions from the business world provide important impetus for our research activities and promote their use in practical applications.

Society

Our department is involved in various areas of society. Our researchers advise and support policymakers and civil society with their expertise and recommendations for action. We have been cooperating with schools and teachers for many years. We see it as a joint task to strengthen education in the STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
