Networking meeting with STEM subject teachers on 22 June 2023

How can we get young people interested in science and technology?

2023/06/23

On 22 June 2023, on the initiative of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, more than 30 subject teachers met at the department to discuss with representatives of the department, the central student advisory service and other guests how to get young people more interested in science and technology.

The department has been involved in collaborations with schools for many years. The ‘Rent-a-Prof’ programme has attracted national attention over the last 25 years and we see it as a joint task to strengthen education in the STEM subjects (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology).

During the discussion, structural deficits in the teaching of natural sciences in the middle school were addressed and the possibilities for supplementary offers within the framework of compulsory elective lessons as well as study groups and projects were discussed. The central student advisory service presented its services, with the ‘Students@School’ offer in particular providing low-threshold study information for students who have not been out of school for so long.

The departments presented various exhibits, which were generally developed for teaching in the department, but could also be used for demonstrations in schools.
