career swipe - Professional Orientation
Online tool for exploring and reflecting on the personal and professional aspirations of children and adolescents.

About the project

As part of the project "Digital Learning Portal for the School-to-Career Transition," funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the game "career swipe" was developed to encourage adolescents to reflect on their career choices. The career choice model proposed by Linda Gottfredson served as the fundamental basis for this initiative. The reflection focuses on professional stereotypes, reasons for excluding specific occupations, and the varied societal evaluation of professions. The challenge was to ensure that the game, "career swipe," could be understood without additional pedagogical guidance and used in a straightforward manner. Consequently, special attention was given to crafting language, concepts, and design to resonate with and be intuitively accessible to adolescents. "Career swipe" is initially offered through the platform ueberaus.de, providing free and easily accessible access. Linda Gottfredson demonstrated that the career choices of young individuals often manifest as an unconscious exclusion process, a finding confirmed by recent research. The game empowers users to recognize and comprehend these unconscious processes, potentially unveiling new career options. Addressing stereotypical perceptions of professions and evaluating individuals based on their occupations are equivalent goals of the game. The target audience for the game includes adolescents aged 14 to 27, and it was designed to be motivating, encouraging repeated play. During implementation, care was taken to ensure the game's accessibility on various devices, adhering to the "mobile-first" principle to enable access from anywhere. Additionally, the game is suitable for use in classrooms or support sessions within small groups as part of educational programs. Long-term integration into the mentioned learning portal is planned, allowing adolescents access through a preceding registration process. For data protection reasons, only achieved milestones will be transferred to the portal. Upon completion of the game, adolescents have the option to download their results. The integration of the game into the portal utilizes the SCORM format.
