Why magnetic nanoparticle?

Only a small amount of an administered drug actually reaches the disease site. The rest is distributed non-specifically throughout the body, which can cause serious side effects. This is a well-known problem with chemotherapy, for example. Our vision is to transport drugs precisely and locally to where they are needed in the future. This approach can significantly reduce side effects while increasing the effectiveness of therapies. To this end, we are developing microrobots and nanorobots: tiny systems loaded with active substances that can be controlled through the body using magnetic fields. This enables us to address tumors, inflammations, and vascular constrictions directly. We are researching suitable materials, structures, and manufacturing processes; developing control and imaging technologies; and investigating specific medical applications. Another focus is magnetic fluid hyperthermia. This technique involves heating magnetic nanoparticles locally to gently destroy tumors or trigger the release of drugs at the desired location. To ensure that micro- and nanorobots can safely navigate through the body in the future, we are working on magnetic particle imaging (MPI). MPI makes magnetic nanoparticles visible in real time without exposing patients to radiation. MPI opens up new possibilities not only for navigating micro- and nanorobots but also for precise diagnostics, temperature measurements, and characterizing particle properties. Our research combines engineering, materials science, biology, and medicine. It offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of basic research and clinical application and to actively participate in developing tomorrow's medical applications
