Emmy Noether Group at etit develops decision algorithms for intelligent networked systems

In her project “Distributed decision-making in real time in autonomous driving and smart grids”, Tatiana Tatarenko is developing new efficient decision-making algorithms for real multi-agent systems at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. The project is funded by the Emmy Noether Programme of the German Research Foundation (DFG). The funding for the first three years amounts to around 1.1 million euros, and includes the funds for two doctoral positions.
Real-time capable distributed decision algorithms are of great importance for intelligent networked systems. In her project, is analysing two multi-agent scenarios at the Department of Control Methods and Intelligent Systems: transport systems with autonomous vehicles, and hierarchically structured electricity grids. The aim of her research is to develop new methods that enable autonomous vehicles to move safely in traffic and optimise traffic flow at the same time. By combining cooperative optimisation and game theory, complex interactions between agents can be modelled and the optimum decisions be made. This enables the safe and efficient utilisation of resources and improves the overall performance of the system.
However, the results of the project will not just improve the efficiency, safety and sustainability of transport systems and smart grids. The developed algorithms can also be transferred to other areas of application in which multi-agent systems play a role. The research work thus makes a generally important contribution to the development of intelligent networked systems of the future.
About the person
is an Early Career Researcher at the Department of Control Methods and Intelligent Systems led by Professor Jürgen Adamy at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (etit) at TU Darmstadt. Since 2017, she has been building up an independent research group in the field of multi-agent systems and game theory as a postdoc, with the aim of establishing game theory and distributed optimisation in automation and control engineering tasks. Her research activities have taken her to the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, the University of Colorado Boulder and Arizona State University (ASU), among others.
