Department MUST and Institute DIR receive department award for good teaching

As part of the RMU-funded project “Practical experiments in medical technology – the robot as a surgical assistant”, a new experiment was created for the measurement technology lab, which was awarded the departmental prize for good teaching.

2023/11/23

In the measurement technology lab a compulsory module for the electrical engineering and information technology courses, medical technology, mechatronics, and information systems technology courses in the 4th semester with around 250 students, we have designed a new experiment in which a liver biopsy is carried out on a tissue phantom with the help of a robotic arm. The laboratory internship is an essential part of the degree in which the learned theory is put into practice.

A large number of employees, students and professors were involved in the creation of this experiment, without whom it would not have been possible. The project, which was originally initiated by Markus Hessinger (former MUST research assistant), was supervised by Romol Chadda, Niklas Schäfer (all active WiMis FG MUST), Matthias Rutsch, Jan Hinrichs (former WiMi FG MUST) and Lajos Basten (then GUF, now at Cologne University Hospital). Felix Herbst and Sven Suppelt (both students at the time, now at FG MUST as WiMi) developed the robot arm together, with the latter completing the experiment and integrating it seamlessly into the measurement technology practical course. The experiment could not have been realized without the support of Prof. Mario Kupnik (MUST) and Prof. Dr. Thomas Vogl (GUF).

We are delighted to have been awarded the “Athene-Preis” for Good Teaching for this experiment and would like to thank everyone involved once again.
