Development of methods in the field of systems theory and control engineering and their application across various disciplines (mechatronics, biology, process engineering, nanotechnology, medical engineering, automotive engineering):

  • Optimisation-based and predictive control
  • Systems biology
  • Analysis of complex nonlinear systems
  • Nonlinear structural and parameter identification
  • Control of complex, distributed systems via communication networks
  • Since August 2021, Professor and Head of the Chair of Cyber-Physical Systems and Mechatronics at the Institute of Automatic Control and Mechatronics, Technical University of Darmstadt.
  • 2007 Appointment as University Professor and Head of the Chair of Systems Theory and Control Engineering at the Institute of Automatic Control, Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg.
  • 2004–2007 Research Associate and Lecturer at the University of Stuttgart, interrupted by visiting appointments at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the University of California, Santa Barbara (USA), the University of Sannio, Benevento (Italy), and Imperial College London.
  • 2004 Awarded a doctorate with distinction.
  • 1999 Returned to the University of Stuttgart with his doctoral supervisor, Leibniz Prize laureate Frank Allgöwer, where he played an active role in establishing the Institute of Systems Theory and Control Engineering.

Commenced doctoral studies at ETH Zurich at the Institute for Automatic Control.

Studied Engineering Cybernetics at the University of Stuttgart and Process Engineering with a specialisation in control engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison (USA).
