Renewable energies and soldering workshop
2025/04/10 by Maria Rizou, Sandra Siebert
‘No nonsense with solder’ was the motto of Girls' Day 2025 at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at TU Darmstadt. 19 schoolgirls from grades 5 to 9 enthusiastically took part in the sunny weather to gain an insight into electrical engineering and information technology.
Tim Frieß and Moritz Wermann from the Electrical Power Systems with Integration of Renewable Energies (E5) Lab visualised the power supply using renewable energies with a self-built LEGO model.
They then went on to the soldering workshop, for which the faculty's student councils (Mechatronics, Medical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology and Information Systems Technology) worked hard to design a so-called Useless Machine for the girls. Under the guidance of tutors, the participants assembled, soldered and mounted a circuit board with various components and enthusiastically learnt how to use a hot soldering iron safely. At the end, everyone was allowed to take the finished project home with them.
A subsequent lunch in the canteen with all participants provided an opportunity for lively discussions.
