Awards presented to international students

This year's German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) prize for outstanding achievements by international students at TU Darmstadt goes to Anna Klyushina, at the time of nomination a student on the Master's degree course in Mechatronics with a specialization in Robotics. The award, endowed with 1,000 euros, was presented at a ceremony at which the winners of international scholarships at TU Darmstadt were also honored.

Anna Klyushina, who completed her Master's degree in May 2024 and is now a doctoral student and research assistant at the Control Methods and Intelligent Systems Lab in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, impressed the DAAD award jury not only with her academic excellence, but also with her commitment to the university environment.

“A role model for many”

As an elected student representative and member of the student council, she actively campaigned for the improvement of study conditions and contributed to the further development of the Master's degree program in Mechatronics, among other things. She was also involved as a tutor during the induction weeks for new students and made it easier for them to start their studies at TU Darmstadt. Her commitment extended beyond the university: she supported students and promoted intercultural exchange in her role as residence hall spokesperson and through her work at the Department of International Affairs. She was also active at national level at national student council conferences and took part in Girls' Day as a tutor in a soldering course to get girls interested in technology.

“With her work and commitment, Anna Klyushina is a role model for many and impressively demonstrates how international students are an enrichment for the university landscape in Germany, not only academically but also socially,” says the jury in its statement.

Scholarships were also awarded to international students at the award ceremony in karo 5.

“TU Darmstadt is proud to be one of the universities with the highest proportion of international students in Germany,” said Heribert Warzecha, TU Vice President for Studies, Teaching and Diversity. “The challenges for our international students in particular are high in order to successfully complete their studies. These include, for example, the administrative hurdles involved in starting a degree course or finding affordable accommodation. International students leave their familiar social environment to study with us, usually have to learn new languages, familiarize themselves with a new university system and financing their studies is also challenging, as they are not entitled to Bafög, for example. I am therefore delighted that we can financially support at least a small number of international students with the scholarships.”

Six students received the scholarship for more equal opportunities. In the summer semester of 2024, a total of 31 students from 15 different countries in nine departments or subject areas were awarded the degree scholarship. With the HessenFonds scholarship a researcher from Sudan, a doctoral student from Afghanistan and two Master's students from Syria are currently being supported at TU Darmstadt. The Carlo and Karin Giersch Foundation's Study Start Scholarship Programsupports four first-year students this winter semester.

The DAAD Prize

The DAAD Prize is awarded annually to international students at TU Darmstadt to honour outstanding achievements and exceptional commitment. The prize, which is endowed with 1,000 euros per university, is intended to help give the large number of international students at German universities a face and connect them with stories.

A committee consisting of representatives from various status groups at the university (professors, students, academic staff), the ombudsperson for international students and the Department of International Affairs makes the selection from among the nominated students.

Professors and staff can nominate international students for the TU Darmstadt DAAD Prize.
