The vehicles of the future – The 15th ISAL
TU at the global center of automotive lighting technology
2023/10/05 by Benedikt Schöberl
The 15th ISAL (International Symposium for Automotive Lighting) conference was held at the Darmstadtium Congress Center in Darmstadt between September 25 and 27, 2023. The conference was first held in 1995 and is organized biennially by the Department of Adaptive Lighting Systems and Visual Processing at the TU Darmstadt.
With 800 international experts participating from 29 countries from all over the world, this year's conference confirmed the central importance of TU Darmstadt as a knowledge and communication center for international automotive lighting technology in the era of e-mobility and automated vehicles. The ISAL 2023 conference included 61 presentations, 20 posters, 2 panel discussions, and two keynote lectures on Darmstadt's views on the automated vehicle of the future, and on innovation cycles in automotive lighting technology. The main topics were:
1. driver assistance systems with lighting technology systems such as projections on the road and displays;
2. technological developments with sensors (such as cameras, lidar, radar, sensor fusions) and AI-based methods for object and object intention recognition;
3. communication systems between future automated computer-controlled vehicles with pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users;
4. energy use in electric vehicles in urban traffic environments and general sustainability in vehicle development and use.
These topics cover very well the main areas of modern electrical engineering and information technology, as well as computer science. The next conference will take place again in Darmstadt at the end of September 2025.
So we can already be excited now.
