Pharmaceutical spectroscopy

We are researching innovative Raman spectroscopic techniques for pharmaceutical applications, especially regarding the molecular structure, composition and characterisation of the properties of pharmaceutical active ingredients (API) and formulations.

We are developing novel highly frequency-resolved and chemical imaging methods for understanding the molecular mode of action of active ingredients and for analysing drug-target interactions, in vitro and in cells. We also want to detect and analyse important weak biomolecular interactions with high-throughput methods in drug assays.

In the field of chemical imaging of pharmaceutical formulations, we monitor the distribution, particle size and polymorphism of various active ingredients simultaneously with molecular contrast. This enables us to directly quantify multiple ingredients in situ, without having to dissolve the tablets. We also use these techniques to check counterfeit or incorrectly stored pharmaceuticals and to analyse the correct concentrations of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) in general.

Fast, non-contact vibrational spectroscopic measurement techniques can also offer considerable advantages over conventional methods for in-process control and represent a resource-saving and more sustainable alternative. Thus, highly specific and sensitive analyses could be carried out quickly online and at-line without interrupting the process.
