Providing Flexibility by Renewable Energy Plants (WISE-Project IIT Bombay)

Projektseminar

Background

In the course of the German phase-out of nuclear and coal energy, the large power plants in the German transmission grid will be disconnected from the grid until 2038. With the shutdown of large power plants, the possibility to react flexibly to changes in the active and reactive power demand in the transmission grid will also decrease. One possibility to cover the active and reactive power demand in the future is to use the flexibility potential from the subordinate „active distribution grid“. Here, controllable renewable energy plants in the lower voltage levels offer new P-Q-potentials to support the transmission grid.

Task

Within the scope of the research project, the question should be answered which contribution of flexibilities can be provided by an „active distribution grid“. For this purpose, methods are to be applied that can estimate active and reactive power operating points on the basis of „Feasible Operating Regions“ (FORs) at connection points to the higher-level grid. The challenge of these methods is to reconcile high accuracy and computational complexity. Other aspects of the project work can be the consequences of prediction errors of the FOR calculation or the influence of different operating regions from renewable energy resources on the FOR of a whole grid region.
