Grid-friendly Renewable Energy Communities

Decarbonization measures, including the expansion of renewable energy generation and the increased installation of electric vehicle chargers and heat pumps, can cause high power peaks and put additional strain on the electric grid at medium and low voltage level. As an alternative to subsequent grid expansion, an improved control of volatile generation and flexible assets in low-voltage grids can prevent an overloading of the grid infrastructure.
Renewable energy communities (RECs), as introduced within the EU's Clean Energy for All Europeans package, provide a regulatory framework for aggregation and optimally operation of controllable assets. As an energy management system beyond the individual grid connection points, RECs may be able to open additional flexibility potential.
However, participation in a REC, which is encouraged by various incentive models such as reduced grid fees, does not necessarily result in an operation, that reduces grid load to justify this incentive. In the future, proposals shall be made for incentive models or REC requirements that ensure a more grid-friendly operation.
