Optimal Design of Sustainable On-Site Multi-Modal Energy Systems

Multi-modal coupling on on-site energy systems has the potential to help accommodate an increasing share of renewable generation and enhance energy efficiency. Sector coupling, flexible loads and storage technologies offer opportunities to both reduce financial expenditures and improve the environmental footprint. Simultaneously, these measures significantly increase the complexity of the system design. Therefore, this Thesis aims at developing a holistic modeling framework to assist energy system planners in making optimal investment decisions regarding economic and ecological objectives. Moreover, the developed methods will aim to ensure reliability and resilience of the energy system. By employing the methods on several real-world use cases, its validity and functionality will be proven.
