The ever-increasing deployment of small-scale distributed energy technologies such as rooftop photovoltaic (PV), battery storages or combined heat and power (CHP) has led to the evolvement of so called prosumers – entities who both generate and consume energy. Current regulatory regimes and electricity market designs are unable to incentivize prosumers to adapt their consumption or production to local signals of scarcity or excess. This issue becomes even more severe considering the increasing electricity consumption of electric vehicles and heat pumps. However, developments in communication and control infrastructure (e.g. edge devices) lay the technical basis for a redesign of the current power system and energy market structures towards local energy markets. This Thesis deals with the development and evaluation of market concepts and a market platform for energy trading amongst prosumers considering the limitations of the distribution grid. Developed market mechanisms will be applied and tested in the context of the research project Pebbles.
