Curriculum Vitae

Helmut F. Schlaak was born in Berlin, Germany. He received the Dipl.-Ing. Degree in electrical engineering and the Dr.-Ing. (Ph.D.) degree from the Technische Universität Berlin, Germany, in 1978 and 1984, respectively. His thesis was focused on integrated optical waveguide modulators.

From 1983 to 1986, he was Head of the integrated optics group at the Fraunhofer-Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques, Freiburg, Germany, where he was involved in research on integrated optic circuits for sensor systems, especially ring resonators and fiberoptic gyroscopes.

From 1986 to 1998, he was at Siemens AG, Berlin, where first he was the Head of the Microtechnology Center, and was involved in research on silicon microsensors, inkjet print heads, and fiberoptic components. He was then responsible for new relay technologies in the Electromechanical Components Division, Siemens. In 1997, he received the Siemens Innovation Award for inventing a new silicon microrelay.

Since 1999, he has been Full Professor at the Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany and is head of the Microtechnology and Electromechanical systems Laboratory (M+EMS). His research interests include micro system technologies, micro-nano-integration technologies, 3D MEMS, microactuators, electroactive polymer transducers, piezoelectric actuators and medical devices.

Prof. Schlaak received several awards for excellent teaching, such as the E-Teaching Award of the Carlo-Giersch Foundation of the TU Darmstadt (2009 and 2011) for the basic course “Introduction to Electrical Engineering”, in 2013 the 1st prize of the Hessian University Prize for Excellence in Teaching and in 2015 the Athene Prize for Good Teaching of the Carlo-Giersch Foundation of the TU Darmstadt for the project seminar “Practical Development Methodology (PEM)”.

In 2018, he was awarded the EuroEAP Society Award “For important contributions in the field of Dielectric Elastomer Transducers” and the “VDE Ehrenring” (Ring of Honour) ‐ the highest German award in the field of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Information Technology.

Prof. Schlaak is member of the IEEE, acting in different functions in the VDE and the VDE/VDI Society on Microelectronics, Microsystem Technology and Precision Engineering (GMM). He is referee for several technical journals and conferences and the Chairman of various conferences and workshops. Furthermore, he is co-founder of NanoWired GmbH, Gernsheim, for the novel electrical connection using metallic fastener ”KlettWelding" with nanowires.
