Steinmetz has been head of the Multimedia Communication Lab (KOM) at the Department etit at the TU Darmstadt since 1996. With over 30 researchers he is working on the realization of his vision of seamless adaptive multimedia communication. By further developing adaptive networks, he is helping to shape the architecture of the Internet of the future
He is a member of the Council for Digital Ethics of the State of Hesse and is committed to responsible digitization. He was the first German scientist to receive both an IEEE Fellow and an ACM Fellow award.
