Organization, Dates & Deadlines

To make sure you are well prepared for your stay abroad, we have summarized all the important organizational information for you here.

The contact point for general information about a stay abroad is the Department of International Relations and Mobility (IBM) at TU Darmstadt.

Since the first application round and the applicant selection are handled at the department etit, you have additional contact persons in the form of our exchange coordinators in the service center of etit, who will advise you both professionally and organizationally.

An application for an exchange program is divided into two steps: First, you apply internally to the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. The department nominates you for places that are still available. Then you apply to the partner university outside the TU. Keep to the following steps:

1. Get informed about the opportunities for a stay abroad in time! The International realtions officeorganizes a GO OUT-Campaignevery June and October.
2. Come to our information event “Study abroad”, offered by our department at the start of every semester, around the second or third week of lectures. (register via TUCaN).
3. Fill out the Online- Application form. You can fit it at the Online Application.
4. Send all required documents to our Exchange coordinator or at the etit service center . Be aware of the deadline at November 30th, for a stay abroad in the following academic year.
5. You might me invited to a nomination interview with the selection commission from early December to early January.
6. The selection commission decides according to your application and interview. Their decision, as well as your documents, are send to the International relations office (IRO) .
7. The IRO will inform you about your nomination an the following procedure. You receive a Declaration of acceptance (Annahmeerklärung) that you have to sign and send back.

Be aware:
Only when the IRO has received your signed declaration, can they nominate you at our partner university.
8. When you receive notice about your successful nomination you have to apply at the partner university. In most cases our partner will send you the required documents.

Be aware:
To apply at most of our partner universities, you will already need your Learning Agreement. .
In the followint table you find a list of all reqired documents, that you should submit to us electronically.
Please consider:
  • Sort the documents in the given order in one single pdf file. Submissions of several pdf's or in printed form will be rejected.
  • Only submit your documents if they are complete.

Document Explanation and remarks
Cover letter Please use the cover letter to describe your motivation for the aspired exchange programme (max. one DIN A4 page). Please write in English.

Attention: You only have to submit a cover letter for your first choice.

When stating your preferred university, you must also give a second and third choice.
tabular Curriculum Vitae (with photo) Please write in English.
Copy of your bachelor certificate Only required, if you haven't completed your bachelor's degree at TU Darmstadt.
Transcript of records You can get it at the secretariat of examination or print it from TUCaN.
Study plan abroad Make a list of all courses you want to take at the partner university. Match these courses with the elective modules or Studium Generale of your study plan at TU Darmstadt.

Attenton: Only do this for your first choice university.
Language certificate Inquire at the partner university's website, what kind of language certificate they require. If you already have one, you can add it to your application. If you don't have it yet, register for the language test.

Attention: For English speaking programmes, partner universities usually require a TOEFL certificate.

For your exchange abroad (also applies to double degree) you have to fulfill the following requirements:

  • You are enrolled in a degree program of the department that leads to a university degree (B.Sc. or M.Sc.).
  • At the beginning of your stay abroad, you have successfully completed at least four semesters of your bachelor's degree.
  • Your grade point average for the first four semesters is 2.5 or better. In other European countries, a grade point average of 3.0 or better is accepted.
  • You have sufficient knowledge of the language of the partner university.

You can only use an ERASMUS+ program once during your study period.

For services rendered during a stay abroad, you must submit an application for recognition. This application consists of the following parts:

1. Recognition form

2. Your examination plan as a rule the overview of the entire elective catalog

3. information about the exams you will take / have taken abroad

  • exact title of the course and its translation into English or German
  • Summary of content (syllabus) + Learning Outcomes
  • Type of course (lecture, tutorial, practical course, seminar, …)
  • Extent of the course (ECTS credits or academic units)

In order for your achievements from your stay abroad to be recognized, you must submit a transcript of records (relévé des notes) and a brief description. If your electives change during your stay abroad, be sure to submit the amended application for recognition together with the transcript of records.

Our recognition table gives an overview of examination achievements at partner universities that are recognized for the study programs at etit.

Credit in elective courses is usually easily obtained if the following criteria are observed:

  • The achievements obtained abroad correspond in content and requirements to the study program at TU Darmstadt.
  • No more than half of the credits to be earned in a degree program are earned abroad.
  • The credits earned abroad do not significantly overlap with the contents of other courses taken in your studies at TU Darmstadt.

Recognition of compulsory courses is only possible if the work performed abroad essentially corresponds to the compulsory course to be recognized for the degree program at the TU Darmstadt.

Double Degree

With a grade point average better than 2.5, double degree programs offer the possibility to obtain both the Master of Science at TU Darmstadt and the corresponding degree of one of etit's double degree partner universities with only a little extension of study time. The application procedure is identical to that of a regular stay abroad.

Students of biomedical engineering can only take subjects at our partner universities abroad that they can include in their study plan in “A Fundamentals of Electrical and Information Engineering”, “Elective Catalog Mechanical Engineering”, “Elective Catalog Computer Science and Programming”, “Open Elective Catalog Electrical and Information Engineering” and “Studium Generale”. Unfortunately, subjects from the area “B Fundamentals of Medicine” may not be selected.
